Being part beach and part jungle, Pulau Kapas is a suitable place for the Sun and Sea lover to go. It provides the typical line of activities such as snorkelling, diving, trekking, kayaking, island tours, windsurfing, fishing and squid catching. Snorkelling Kapas Island is excellent for snorkelling as there is an abundance of corals and other marine life, visibility is good and the water is shallow and calm. As the coral is mainly around the rocky edges of the island, you can still go swimming off the beautiful beaches, even at low tide. Reef sharks are a common sight just yards from the shore. Masks, snorkels and fins are available for rent from most guesthouses at RM5 for the day. Underwater diving The key attraction for diving at Pulau Kapas is the World WarII shipwreck located 5 nautical miles offshore. The outer reefs on her seaward side has are good diving spots as well. Its shallow water makes it an ideal training ground for drivers. Japanese boats and boats plying the route from Singapore carrying rice sags during World War II have been sunk in the area. Thai fishing boats caught or illegal entry in Terengganu waters are also sunk here as artificial reefs. There are also entry in Terengganu water are also sunk here as artificial reefs. There are also remnants of wooden boats washed ashore. There boats were used by Vietnamese refugees who tried to escape Pulau Bidong, their temporary shelter about 27 nautical miles from Pulau Kapas. Previously a well-guarded secret amongst members of the diving community. In the open sea, divers will come across the Shark Point and Turtle Point. Those into wreck diving will find the water surrounding Pulau Kapas intriguing. Jungle trekking Pulau Kapas also offers a variety of adventures to the Sun lover. You could track into the island's interior and amazed at the colourful natural flora and fauna along the way. Kayaking The Sea of Pulau Kapas is safe and an enjoyable place to canoe or kayak. It is always very pleasurable to row a canoe or kayak in the evening time when temperature is cooler. Other than enjoying the scenery, you can view fishes jumping out from the water to cheer you up and visiting some of the hidden beaches on the east side as you go. Windsurfing Visitors can go windsurfing on Pulau Kapas during the blustery monsoon season, although conditions will probably be too sedate during the peak season. For the beginners, tuition is available from some of the guesthouses. Turtle Conservation Sanctuary You can easily paddle or swim over to Pulau Gemia to take a look at the Turtle Conservation Sanctuary where turtles come ashore to lay eggs. The eggs are carefully collected and hatched under supervision, then released back into the sea. Pulau Gemia is a tiny island located just beside Pulau Kapas. It also known as a Sister Of Pulau Kapas. Sea eagles, reef herons, tern and also the precious giant leatherback turtle come to nest their eggs on this island every year. Like some of the regular tourists who spend their holiday on the island every year, green turtles, Hawksbill and Olive Ridley turtle are also regular visitors too. Fishing and squid catching Deep-sea fishing enthusiasts will find plenty of options for getting out on the waves. Equipment rental is available from guesthouses and plenty of locals catch grouper off the main pier. But Pulau Kapas is famous for squid fishing between April and September and visitors can join a local fisherman boat and catch squid around two feet long. _______________________________________________________________________________ |
